(Purple Top) Bonariensis

Verbena bonariensis is a tall, see through perennial with thin, branching stems that carry small clusters of bright purple flowers at the very top. The leaves sit low on the plant, so you look straight through the stems to whatever is planted behind. It reaches about 100-150 cm in height but only 40-50 cm in width, which lets you use it almost anywhere in a border. Plant 5-7 per square metre in loose groups, and do not be afraid to put it near the front where the flowers float above shorter plants. It flowers from July right through to October and is one of the best butterfly and bee plants there is. It suits gravel gardens, prairie style borders and big pots, and it seeds itself around in a friendly way.

Give it full sun and an open position, it needs the light to stand up straight and flower for months. Plant it in soil that drains well, it tolerates dry spells once rooted but rots in ground that stays soggy in winter. Water in the first season and during long droughts, and water pots more often because they dry out far quicker than open soil. Deadhead through the summer if you want fewer seedlings, and leave the stems standing over winter before cutting them back to about 10 cm in early spring. It is hardy in most winters, but in a cold or wet spot a layer of mulch over the crown gives it a better chance of coming back. Older plants can fade away after a few years, though the seedlings usually take over without any help.
