(Star Jasmine) Star of Venice

The Trachelospermum Star of Venice is an evergreen climber with glossy dark green leaves and clusters of white, star-shaped flowers that smell sweetly of jasmine. It climbs to about 300 cm in height and spreads about 100-150 cm in width at maturity, once it has a trellis or wires to hold on to. Plant 2 per metre of fence or trellis for a dense, green screen. The flowers appear in summer and are popular with bees. It looks great against a sunny wall, along a fence or in a large pot on the patio. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.

Plant the Trachelospermum in a sunny to partly shaded, sheltered position with a trellis or wires to climb on. It prefers well-draining, humus-rich soil and does not like waterlogged roots. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first year and when grown in pots, as container plants dry out much faster. Prune lightly after flowering to keep the shape and the growth in check. The plant is hardy, but protect the roots with a layer of mulch and wrap young or potted plants in fleece during severe frost.
