Give it the hottest, sunniest spot you have, with light soil that drains fast. Poor and gritty is better than rich, and it needs far less water than most plants once established. Water in the first weeks after planting and then only in long droughts. Trim the mat lightly after flowering to keep it dense and stop the centre going woody. It is fully hardy, though it dislikes standing wet in winter more than it dislikes cold.

The Thymus serpyllum is a creeping evergreen mat of tiny aromatic leaves that releases its scent the moment you brush past. It stays very low at about 5-10 cm in height and spreads 30-40 cm wide. Plant 9-12 per square meter to close the ground quickly. In June and July it disappears under a haze of pink-purple flowers that bees find irresistible. It is made for the gaps between paving stones, the top of a wall or a sunny rockery, and it takes the occasional footstep in its stride.
