(Arrowhead plant) Pixie

Small arrow-shaped leaves in soft, pale green, with lighter veins running through them: that's the first thing you'll notice about this one. It stays compact and bushy in its 12 cm pot, so it's just as happy on a shelf or a desk as on a bright windowsill. Picture a new leaf unfurling every few weeks right next to your favourite mug. In the rainforests of Central and South America its relatives scramble up tree trunks, and given time yours may start to climb or trail too. It's a friendly, forgiving green friend that deserves a spot in your urban jungle. Give it a bright corner and it'll thank you with fresh growth.

Give it bright, indirect light and those pale veins will stay crisp, while deep shade makes the leaves greener and the stems leggier. Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, roughly once a week in summer and a little less in winter, and always let the excess drain away so the roots never sit wet. It likes a cosy spot between 16 and 27 degrees, away from draughty windowsills and radiators, and a bit of extra humidity keeps the leaves happy. Repot into fresh, airy potting soil every couple of years, when roots start to peek out of the drainage holes. Add a little plant food every few weeks in spring and summer, then let it rest in winter when growth slows down. Pinch back long stems to keep it bushy, and keep it out of reach of curious pets, as the sap can irritate mouths and skin.

That’s why all plants are guaranteed for 30 days after arrival, if still in its original nursery pot.
