Senecio

(Fishhooks) Radicans String of Bananas

Plump, curved leaves that look like tiny green bananas, strung along trailing stems: it's hard not to smile at this one. Hang it up high or let it spill over the edge of a shelf and the stems will tumble down in a lively green waterfall. It's a succulent at heart, so it forgives the odd forgotten watering and grows quickly in a bright spot. In spring it may even surprise you with small white flowers. Give it a place where everyone can admire it.

Give it a bright spot with plenty of indirect light, and a few hours of gentle sun are fine too. Water about every other week and let the top few centimetres of soil dry out completely in between, because the leaves store water and soggy roots are its biggest enemy. Normal room temperature suits it well, ideally between 12 and 27 degrees, and average household humidity is plenty. Use a well draining cactus or succulent mix and repot every two years or so when the stems fill the pot. Feed it lightly in spring and summer and skip feeding in winter. Wrinkled, flat leaves mean it's thirsty, while mushy ones mean too much water. Keep it out of reach of curious pets and kids, as the sap is mildly toxic.
