Goldsturm is the classic black eyed Susan: golden yellow daisies with a dark chocolate brown cone, produced in such numbers that the foliage almost disappears. The dark green leaves are rough to the touch and form a dense clump that widens steadily on short runners. Plants reach 60-70 cm tall and 45-60 cm wide, so allow 5-7 per square metre for a solid block of colour. Flowering starts in midsummer and carries on into autumn, roughly July to October, and bees and butterflies work the flat flowers well into the late season. It is a workhorse for a sunny border, a prairie planting or a large terrace pot, and the dark seed cones still look good once the petals drop.
Plant it in full sun; in shade it flowers far less and the stems stretch. It likes soil with some body, ideally moisture retentive and enriched with compost, but it must not sit in winter wet. Keep the soil lightly moist and water thoroughly in dry spells, especially while it is setting buds; in a pot it dries out very quickly and can wilt after a day or two of neglect in summer. Leave the seed heads for the birds over winter and cut the whole clump back to about 5 cm in late winter, just before new growth starts. It is fully hardy in open ground; divide the clump every three to four years in spring to keep flowering generous.
