Autumn Bliss is an autumn fruiting raspberry that carries its crop on canes grown the same year, which makes it far simpler to manage than summer varieties. Small white flowers open through summer, followed by firm, deep red berries that ripen from August until the first frosts. The canes reach 120-150 cm and are stiff enough that most gardeners grow them without any support, and each plant takes up about 40-50 cm. Plant in a row 40-50 cm apart, or allow 2-3 plants per square metre, and the row fills itself with new suckers over time. Bees work the flowers steadily through summer, so a row along a sunny fence or at the back of the vegetable plot earns its space twice over.
Grow it in full sun for the sweetest fruit; in light shade the crop is smaller and later. It wants deep, humus rich soil that holds moisture but never waterlogs, so dig in plenty of compost or well rotted manure before planting and mulch every spring. Keep the soil lightly moist and water generously in dry spells, especially while the fruit is swelling, because dry roots mean small, seedy berries; a plant in a large pot dries out fast and needs watering almost daily in summer. Pruning is simple: cut every cane right down to ground level in late winter, around February, and the new canes that follow will fruit that same autumn. It is fully hardy in open ground, and a layer of compost after pruning feeds the young canes as they come up.
