(Thornless Blackberry) Fruticosus thornfree

The Rubus fruticosus thornfree is a thornless blackberry with long, arching canes, dark green leaves and white to pale pink flowers that turn into large, sweet black berries. It reaches about 300 cm in height and 150-200 cm in width at maturity when trained along a fence, wall or wires. Plant 1 per 2 square meters, or one every 2 metres along a fence. Bees and bumblebees love the flowers in spring and early summer, and the fruit ripens from late summer. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers or fruits.

Plant the blackberry in a sunny to half-shaded position, ideally sheltered from strong wind. It prefers humus-rich, well-draining soil that stays lightly moist. Water regularly during dry spells and while the fruit is forming, especially when grown in a container, as pots dry out much faster. Tie the canes to a support and, after harvest, cut the canes that have fruited down to ground level while keeping the new green canes. This plant is fully hardy and can stay outside all winter.
