Phlox

(Garden Phlox) Paniculata David

Phlox paniculata David carries large, domed heads of pure white flowers on strong upright stems above fresh green leaves, and the scent carries across the garden on warm evenings. It reaches about 90-100 cm in height and 50-60 cm in width and dies back completely in winter. Plant 3-4 per square metre, ideally in groups of three, so the heads form one broad cloud of white. It flowers from July into September and the flat heads are an easy landing place for butterflies and bees. Use it in the middle or back of a border in sun or light shade, next to darker foliage, and cut a few stems for the vase. David is one of the more mildew resistant varieties, which is why it stays a favourite.

David is happy in full sun or partial shade, and a spot with morning sun and a little afternoon shade keeps the white flowers looking fresh for longer. It wants deep, humus rich soil that stays lightly moist, so work in compost before planting and mulch in spring. Never let it dry out completely, water thoroughly during dry spells and check pots often because they run dry much faster than open ground. Remove the faded heads to encourage side shoots, then cut all the stems down to about 5 cm in late autumn or early spring. Give the clump space and air, and thin crowded stems in spring to keep mildew away. It is fully hardy and needs no winter protection.
