Phlomis

(Turkish Sage) Russeliana

Phlomis russeliana carries tiers of soft yellow hooded flowers in neat whorls, threaded up strong upright stems like beads on a string. At ground level it makes a solid evergreen mat of large, heart shaped, sage green leaves with a felted surface. The leaves stay around 30 cm high while the flower stems reach 80-90 cm, and one plant spreads slowly to 60-90 cm wide. Plant 3-5 per square metre and it knits into weed suppressing groundcover within two seasons. It flowers in summer, from June to August, and bees crowd every whorl; the seed heads then stand right through winter, which makes it a strong structural plant for a sunny border, a gravel garden or a dry bank.

Full sun gives the firmest stems and the best flowering, although it will put up with a few hours of shade. It needs free draining soil and thrives on poor, dry or stony ground, while heavy soil that stays wet in winter rots the crown, so work in grit before planting. Once settled it gets through dry spells unaided, so water only in a long drought; in a pot it dries out much faster and wants checking every week. Leave the seed heads standing over winter for the frost and the birds, then cut the old flower stems to the base in early spring and pull away any tatty leaves. The evergreen foliage is fully hardy in open ground and looks its best again as soon as new leaves push through in spring.
