(Love tree) Red Sun

New leaves push out in a hot orange red that slowly cools through amber to deep green, so a healthy plant carries three or four shades at once. Red Sun is compact and upright rather than climbing, which makes it a lovely baby to watch fill out on a windowsill. Every new leaf is a small event, since the colour is at its brightest in the first week and then gradually settles. It stays a manageable size for a long time, so it suits shelves and desks where a bigger Philodendron would take over. A genuinely colourful green friend without needing a rare plant budget.

Your Philodendron Red Sun wants bright indirect light, which is what keeps the new leaves coming through fiery orange instead of dull green. Water every other week and let the top half of the soil dry out first, because Philodendrons hate sitting in wet soil. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth now and then, dust dulls that glossy finish faster than you would expect. Use an airy mix with bark and repot every two years, moving up just one pot size at a time. Feed once a month in spring and summer and stop when growth slows down in autumn. Like all Philodendrons it is toxic if eaten, so keep it away from pets and small children.
