The Passiflora Caerulea, or blue passion flower, is a vigorous climber with deeply lobed leaves and striking flowers with white petals and a blue-purple corona. It climbs with tendrils to about 600 cm in height and spreads 200-300 cm in width at maturity. Plant one every 1.5-2 metres along a fence, wall or pergola, or give a single plant a large obelisk in a big pot. The flowers appear from early summer into autumn, attract bees and are followed by decorative orange fruits. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers or fruits.
Plant the Passiflora in a sunny to partly shaded, sheltered spot, ideally against a warm wall with a trellis or wires to climb. It needs well-draining, moderately rich soil and does not like waterlogged roots. Water regularly during dry spells and feed every few weeks in summer, because plants in pots dry out much faster. Prune in late winter or early spring by shortening last year's shoots and removing weak or dead stems. The plant is hardy down to roughly -10 °C, but protect the roots with a thick layer of mulch in the first winters and wrap pots in fleece.
