Give the catmint a spot in full sun with soil that drains freely, it dislikes wet feet far more than dry ones. Water regularly in the first season and during long dry spells, especially in a pot. Shear the whole plant back by about a third after the first flush and it will flower again within weeks. Cut the old stems down in early spring, just as new shoots appear at the base. It is fully hardy and needs no winter protection.

The Nepeta x faassenii is a soft, silvery cushion of aromatic grey-green leaves topped with clouds of lavender-blue flower spikes. It grows to about 30-40 cm in height and 40-50 cm in width at maturity. Plant 5-7 per square meter for a continuous haze along a path or border edge. It flowers from June well into September and is one of the busiest bee and butterfly plants you can grow. Once settled it shrugs off drought, which makes it a natural partner for gravel gardens and hot, sunny borders.
