Hair thin dark stems studded with tiny round leaves, so delicate that the whole plant looks like green wire someone bent into shape. Muehlenbeckia grows fast and every which way, weaving and tangling until it forms a light, airy mass that spills over the pot rim. As a baby it is still a modest little thing, which makes the transformation over the first year genuinely satisfying to watch. It comes from New Zealand and tolerates cooler rooms better than most houseplants, so a chilly hallway is no problem. A wonderfully unfussy green friend with a lot of personality for its size.

Your wire vine likes bright indirect light and can even take a little direct morning sun without complaining. Water every other week and let the top half of the soil dry out first, though it dislikes drying out completely more than most trailers. Trim it whenever it gets messy, it responds to a cut by branching and coming back thicker within weeks. Use a well draining mix with perlite and repot once a year, since it grows fast and fills its pot quickly. Feed monthly in spring and summer and stop over winter. It handles cooler spots down to around 10 degrees, so it works in rooms where tropical plants would sulk.
