Fresh, lime-bright new leaves that slowly settle into glossy green: that's the colour show this Monstera puts on with every unfurling. At 12 cm tall in a 6 cm pot, this little green friend is still in its heart-shaped phase, and the famous splits and holes arrive as it matures. Picture it on a bright shelf or windowsill, where soft, indirect light keeps those zesty tones looking their best. It grows steadily in the right spot, so before long you'll be watching it climb and reaching for a moss pole. Give it a bright corner and a little patience, and it will show you what it's made of.
Bright, indirect light suits this Monstera best, so a spot near a window but out of the harsh midday sun keeps the lime tones fresh and the leaves from scorching. Water it when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, usually about once a week, and let any excess drain away, because soggy roots are the quickest route to droopy leaves. It's comfortable at normal room temperature, between 15 and 30°C, away from draughty windowsills and radiators, and it enjoys a little extra humidity. Pot it in airy, free-draining potting soil and move it up a pot size about once a year, as a young plant fills its small pot fast. Give it a little plant food every few weeks in spring and summer, and take a break in winter when growth slows down. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth now and then so they can soak up all the light, and don't worry if an older leaf turns yellow, that's just the plant making room for new growth. The leaves are toxic if nibbled, so keep it out of reach of curious pets and small children.
