Monstera

(Swiss Cheese plant) Deliciosa Crème Brulée

Splashes of buttery cream and soft yellow melt into glossy green leaves, a bit like the caramelised top of the dessert this Monstera is named after. It arrives as a little 6 cm baby, which makes it a lovely way to start your own collection of green friends. No two leaves are painted quite the same, so every new unfurling is a small surprise. Give it a bright spot on a shelf or windowsill and watch it slowly grow into a proper statement plant. Consider it the sweet treat of your urban jungle.

Bright, indirect light brings out the cream in the leaves, while harsh midday sun can scorch them, so keep it a little back from a south-facing window. Water roughly every other week, as soon as the top 3 to 4 cm of soil has dried out, and tip away any water left in the saucer. It's happiest between 18 and 26 °C with average to slightly higher humidity, away from radiators and draughts. Plant it in a light, airy potting mix with a handful of perlite, and repot once a year into a pot one size bigger while it's growing fast. Feed it a little plant food every few weeks in spring and summer, and give it a break in winter. Good to know: the leaves are toxic to cats and dogs, and if new leaves come out fully green, move it somewhere brighter to keep the creamy colour.

That’s why all plants are guaranteed for 30 days after arrival, if still in its original nursery pot.
