(Maiden Grass) Sinensis Gracillimus

Gracillimus is a tall maiden grass that builds an upright fountain of very narrow green blades, each with a fine white midrib. In autumn it sends up silky plumes that open pinkish red and fade to silver, and they stay attractive on the plant all winter. It grows to about 150-180 cm tall and 80-120 cm wide, so use it as a solitary at 1-2 plants per m2 or in a large pot. After the first frosts the foliage turns warm straw yellow and rustles in every gust. It works as a light screen on a terrace, as a full stop at the end of a border, or in a row along a fence.

Plant it in full sun, where the clump stays upright and flowers most reliably. Any reasonable garden soil suits it as long as water drains away, and it does best in ground that has been dug over and improved with compost. Water regularly in the first year and during long dry spells, and check a plant in a pot every few days in summer because it dries out far quicker. Leave the stems standing all winter for structure, then cut the whole clump back to 10-15 cm above the ground in late February or March before new shoots appear. It is fully hardy and needs no winter protection.
