(Crocodile fern) Crocodyllus

Look closely at the leaves and you will see exactly how this fern earned its nickname. Every frond is pressed into deep veins that lift the surface into small scaly tiles, so the whole plant reads like something out of a jungle terrarium. It grows as a loose rosette of upright, wavy fronds in a fresh apple green that holds its colour all year round. Park it in a shady corner with a little moisture in the air and it will fill out into a soft, textured mound. A brilliant green friend if you want something that looks unusual without paying rare plant prices.

Your crocodile fern wants bright shade, so keep it out of direct sun that scorches those textured fronds. Water weekly and aim for soil that stays lightly damp, because a fern that dries out completely rarely forgives you. Push a finger into the top layer and water as soon as it feels dry. This one drinks humidity, so a bathroom or a spot beside other plants suits it far better than a dry windowsill. Repot every two years into an airy mix with perlite, and feed once a month through spring and summer. Crispy brown leaf edges are almost always a humidity signal rather than a watering mistake.
