Gallery Red is a dwarf lupin with dense, upright spikes of deep red pea flowers held above hand shaped leaves that catch raindrops beautifully. It reaches around 45-50 cm tall and 40-45 cm wide, roughly half the size of an old fashioned border lupin, so it stands up on its own without staking. Plant 5-7 per square metre in a block, or put three together in a large pot. Flowering runs from late spring into midsummer, and cutting the spent spikes often brings a lighter second flush; bees work the flowers all day. It suits a sunny border, a cottage style planting or a raised bed. All parts of the plant, and the seeds in particular, are toxic if eaten.
Plant it in full sun for the straightest and fullest spikes. Lupins want soil that drains freely and is neutral to slightly acidic; they sulk in chalky ground and rot in heavy clay, so improve stiff soil with compost and grit before planting. Keep the soil lightly moist in the first season and water in dry spells; a lupin in a pot dries out very quickly and drops its buds if it runs dry. Cut each spike back to the base as soon as it fades, then cut the whole plant down to just above ground level in late autumn. It is hardy in open ground, but lupins are naturally short lived, so expect three to four good years and leave a few seed heads if you want replacements.
