(Japanese Honeysuckle) Japonica Halliana

The Lonicera Japonica Halliana is a vigorous climbing honeysuckle with fragrant flowers that open white and fade to soft yellow. It reaches about 800 cm in height and 100-200 cm in width at maturity when it has a fence, pergola or trellis to climb. Plant 1 per metre of fence or trellis, or 1-2 per square meter as dense ground cover. From early summer into autumn the flowers attract bees and butterflies, and the semi-evergreen foliage gives good privacy. It works well on fences, pergolas, walls and in large containers. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.

Plant the honeysuckle in a sunny to semi-shaded position for the best flowering. It prefers humus-rich, well-draining soil and dislikes standing water. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first year and when grown in pots, as container plants dry out much faster. Prune after flowering or in early spring, thinning out old shoots and shortening the rest to keep it in shape. Give it a fence, wire or trellis to twine around. The plant is fully hardy and needs no winter protection in the garden.
