(Shasta Daisy) Silberprinzesschen

Silberprinzesschen is a compact Shasta daisy with clean white ray petals around a golden yellow eye, carried on sturdy stems above a low clump of dark green, toothed leaves. It stays neat at roughly 30-40 cm tall and 30-40 cm wide, so it does not flop open the way taller Shasta daisies tend to. Plant 5-7 per square metre for an unbroken ribbon of white along the front of a bed. It flowers through summer, from June into September, and the flat open blooms make an easy landing pad for bees and butterflies. Use it at the front of a sunny border, along a path, or in a pot on the terrace where you can keep cutting stems for the vase.

Give it full sun; at least six hours of direct light keeps the stems upright and the flowering heavy. Ordinary garden soil is fine as long as it drains freely, so loosen heavy clay with compost and coarse grit before you plant. Keep the soil lightly moist and water in dry spells; a plant in a pot dries out far faster and may want water daily in high summer. Deadhead as you go, then cut the whole clump back to about 10 cm once flowering finishes and tidy the old foliage in early spring. It is fully hardy in open ground and returns stronger each year, though it pays to lift and divide the clump every three years.
