Lavandula angustifolia Hidcote is the compact dark lavender, with short spikes of deep violet purple flowers held on stiff stems above the foliage. The narrow leaves are silvery grey and evergreen, so the plant keeps its shape and colour through the winter as a low grey cushion. It settles at 40-50 cm in height and 40-50 cm in width, staying tidier and darker in flower than the taller lavenders. Plant 4-5 per m2, or space plants 30-35 cm apart in a line for a low hedge along a path. It flowers from June to August, keeps its scent when dried, and is one of the best plants you can grow for bees and butterflies. Use it to edge a border or a terrace, along a sunny path, in a gravel or rock garden, or in a pot by the door where you brush past the aromatic leaves.
Give it full sun and open air; Hidcote needs sun to build up scent and to stay compact. Grow it in poor to moderately fertile soil that drains sharply, adding grit or coarse sand to heavy clay and planting on a slight ridge, because wet feet in winter kill more lavender than cold ever does. Established plants tolerate long dry periods and need water only in extreme drought, but a plant in a pot dries out far quicker and should be checked weekly in summer. Prune every year straight after flowering, in August or early September: cut back by about a third, always into green growth with leaves on it, and never into the bare old wood at the base, because it will not reshoot from there. Hidcote is fully hardy and stays outside all winter; simply avoid a wet, shaded corner and leave the tidying up to that one cut after flowering rather than pruning in late autumn.
