(Bay Laurel) Nobilis

The Laurus nobilis, or bay laurel, is an evergreen shrub with glossy, dark green and aromatic leaves that are also loved in the kitchen. This plant is about 120 cm tall and can grow to around 500 cm in the open ground, with a width of roughly 200-300 cm, although in a container and with regular pruning it stays far more compact. Plant 1 per square meter in a border or in a large pot, or place several close together for a dense, green screen. It is easy to clip into a ball, pyramid or standard, which makes it a classic for patios, entrances and Mediterranean-style gardens.

Place the Laurus nobilis in a sunny to semi-shaded, sheltered spot. It prefers well-draining, moderately fertile soil and does not like wet feet. Water regularly during dry spells, and keep in mind that plants in pots dry out much faster. Prune in early summer, or lightly after the last frost in spring, to keep the shape you want. This plant is not fully hardy, so bring it inside or wrap the pot and crown in fleece before the first frost.
