Jasminum

(Winter Jasmine) Nudiflorum

Jasminum nudiflorum, the winter jasmine, brightens the greyest months with bright yellow, star-shaped flowers on bare, arching green stems. It reaches about 300 cm in height with support and 150-200 cm in width at maturity. Plant 1 per square meter as a cascading slope cover, or 1 every 1-2 metres along a fence, wall or trellis. The flowers appear from December to March, before the small green leaves unfold. It works well on a sunny wall, over a low retaining wall, in a large container on the patio or as a loose, informal hedge. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.

Plant the winter jasmine in a sunny to semi-shaded spot, preferably sheltered from cold winds. It grows in any well-draining garden soil and dislikes standing water. Water regularly in the first year and during extended dry spells, and keep in mind that plants in containers dry out much faster. Prune straight after flowering, in March or April, by cutting the flowered shoots back hard to keep the shrub dense and flowering richly. Tie the long shoots to a trellis or wire if you want it to climb. It is fully hardy and can stay outside all winter without protection.
