The Humulus Lupulus, or common hop, is a vigorous climber with lobed, fresh green leaves and the papery, light green cones that are famous from beer brewing. It twines up a support and reaches about 600 cm in height and 100-150 cm in width at maturity. Plant 1 per square meter, or 1-2 in a large container with a sturdy frame. The cones appear from late summer and are decorative in the garden and in dried bouquets. It is ideal for covering a pergola, fence, trellis or wall quickly, and it dies back each winter to sprout again in spring. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with cones.
Plant the hop in a sunny to semi-shaded position and give it a rope, wire or trellis to twine around. It prefers deep, nutrient-rich, well-draining soil that stays lightly moist. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in a pot, as container-grown plants dry out much faster. Cut all stems back to just above the ground in late autumn or winter, as fresh shoots grow every spring. This plant is hardy and tolerates frost without extra protection in the ground; in a pot, place it in a sheltered spot in cold winters.
