(Bear's paw fern) Tyermannii

The magic of this fern is hidden just under the surface of the soil, where furry silver rhizomes creep over the edge of the pot like little animal paws. Above them sit finely cut, lacy fronds in a deep glossy green that catch the light beautifully. It stays compact and grows slowly, so it holds its shape for years without taking over a shelf. Those creeping rhizomes are the whole point, so plant it where you can actually see them wander. A quietly characterful green friend for anyone who likes detail.

Your bear's paw fern likes bright shade and will sulk in direct sun, so a north or east window is ideal. Water weekly and keep the mix lightly moist, but never let it sit in a saucer of water because those rhizomes rot quickly. Mist the furry rhizomes now and then, they absorb moisture directly and stay plump when the air is humid. Give it an airy mix with bark so water drains fast, and repot every two years without burying the rhizomes. Feed monthly in spring and summer, then stop completely once growth slows in autumn. If fronds pale and thin out, the light is too low rather than the water too little.
