Heuchera

(Coral Bells) Palace Purple

Heuchera Palace Purple makes a low, evergreen mound of large maple shaped leaves in deep bronze purple, with a silvery sheen and a wine red underside. In summer it throws up wiry stems with sprays of tiny creamy white flowers that hover above the foliage. The leaf mound stays around 30-40 cm high and 40-50 cm wide, rising to roughly 50 cm when it is in flower. Plant 5-7 per square metre to create solid, weed suppressing ground cover. It flowers from June to August and the small flowers are surprisingly popular with bees. Use it at the front of a border, along a shady path or in a pot on a terrace that never gets full midday sun.

Palace Purple is happiest in partial shade, though it takes sun as long as the soil never bakes dry, and the leaf colour is deepest with a few hours of light. Plant it in humus rich soil that drains well but stays lightly moist, and work in compost on thin or sandy ground. Water in dry spells and keep a closer eye on pots, which dry out much faster than open soil. Remove the flower stems once they fade and tidy away damaged old leaves in early spring, just as the new ones unfurl. Lift and divide the clump every three or four years, replanting it slightly deeper if the woody crown has pushed itself out of the ground. It is fully hardy and keeps its leaves through winter, so no protection is needed.
