(Daylily) Stella de Oro

Stella de Oro is a compact daylily with golden yellow trumpet flowers of about 6 cm, held just above a dense clump of narrow, arching green leaves. Each bloom lasts a single day, but the plant keeps producing new buds, so it flowers on and off from June into October. It reaches roughly 30-40 cm in height and 30-40 cm in width, so plant 5-7 per m2 for a solid edge. Bees visit the open flowers, and the low mound stays tidy all season. Use it along a path, at the front of a border or in a container by the back door.

Give it full sun or partial shade, and remember that more sun means more flower buds. It copes with most garden soil as long as it is not waterlogged, so loosen heavy clay and work in some compost before planting. Water during dry spells in the first year, and check plants in pots more often because they dry out far quicker than open ground. Remove spent flower stems through the season and cut the foliage back to about 5 cm in late autumn or early spring. It is fully hardy in the garden and needs no winter protection.
