Plant it in full sun or light shade in soil that stays lightly moist but never waterlogged. Water during dry spells, particularly in its first summer and in a pot. Cut the whole plant back close to the ground once flowering fades, and a fresh mound of leaves will appear within weeks, often with a second, lighter flush. Leave the old growth in place over winter and clear it in early spring. It is fully hardy and needs no protection.

The Geranium Johnson's Blue is the classic blue cranesbill, with wide saucer flowers in clear lavender-blue above deeply cut, feathery leaves. It reaches about 40-50 cm in height and 60-75 cm in width at maturity. Plant 3-4 per square meter for a loose, natural weave through a border. The main flush arrives in June and July and hums with bees, and the mound stays handsome long after the flowers fade. It is the kind of perennial that quietly holds a planting together, especially next to roses and grasses.
