Picture slender wands swaying above your border all summer, dotted with white flowers that look like tiny butterflies in mid-flight. Give it some room: Gaura grows to about 100 cm tall and 60-80 cm wide, with an airy habit that never blocks the view of its neighbours. For a light, floaty border, plan on 4-5 per square metre. Bees and butterflies visit the flowers from early summer well into autumn, and the white blooms blush pink as they age. It looks lovely in a sunny border, a gravel garden or a large pot on the patio. Seasonal changes may affect whether this green friend arrives in flower.

Give it a spot in full sun, where the stems stay sturdy and the flowers keep coming. Gaura loves well-drained soil: its long taproot goes looking for water on its own, so wet feet in winter are the real danger. Water regularly in the first season while it settles in, then only during long dry spells, and check pots more often because containers dry out fast. Cut it back by about half in late summer if it gets leggy, and prune it hard in early spring once fresh shoots appear. It is hardy down to about -15 °C in most gardens, as long as the soil does not stay soggy, so a sheltered, free-draining spot is all the winter protection it needs.
