(Coneflower) Purpurea White Swan

Echinacea purpurea 'White Swan' opens creamy white daisy flowers whose petals drop away slightly from a coppery orange central cone, above rough, dark green leaves. It is a little shorter than the pink forms, reaching around 60-80 cm tall and 40-50 cm wide. Plant 4-5 per square metre, and repeat it through a scheme where the white can lift darker planting at dusk. It flowers from July into September and the open centres are easy landing pads for bees, hoverflies and butterflies. Use it in a sunny border, a cutting patch or a gravel garden, and it will also fill a large pot on a sunny terrace.

It needs full sun to flower properly, so avoid a spot shaded by a hedge or wall for half the day. Plant in free draining garden soil of average fertility and improve heavy clay with grit or coarse compost before planting. Water it through its first summer and during long dry spells afterwards; it copes with drought once established, but a specimen in a pot has no reserves and needs checking every couple of days. Remove faded flowers during the season to extend flowering, then cut the stems back to about 10 cm in early spring rather than in autumn, leaving the seed heads for birds. It is reliably hardy in the ground, provided winter water can drain away from the crown.
