Picture a tiny green jaw lined with eyelash-like bristles, blushing red on the inside when the sun hits it just right. That's the Venus flytrap, one of the few green friends that really moves while you watch. Each trap has trigger hairs, and when an insect touches two of them within about twenty seconds, it snaps shut. Give it a bright windowsill in your living room and you'll have a conversation starter that keeps the fruit flies in check too. This baby arrives in a 6 cm pot and will grow into a little cluster of traps in your urban jungle. Resist the urge to poke it, because every trap only closes a handful of times, so let it save them for real flies.
Give it the brightest spot you have, ideally a sunny windowsill with a few hours of direct light, because that's where the traps turn a deep red. Water with rainwater or distilled water only, and keep about a centimetre of water in the saucer during spring and summer, as the minerals in tap water slowly harm the roots. Plant it in nutrient-poor peat and perlite instead of regular potting soil and skip the fertiliser, since it gets its extra food from insects. Room temperature is fine while it grows, and humidity doesn't need any fuss. In winter it needs a rest, so from about November till February, move it somewhere cool and bright at 5 to 10 °C and keep the soil just damp. Don't panic when a few traps turn black, that's normal ageing, so trim them off with clean scissors. Repot every two years in spring, and if it flowers, you can snip off the stalk to keep the energy in the traps.
