Glossy, dark green fronds fan out from a shaggy little trunk, and you'd swear you were looking at a palm. It isn't one, though. The sago palm is a cycad, a group of plants that was around long before the dinosaurs, which makes this green friend a proper living fossil. Picture it on a bright sideboard or in a sunny corner of your living room, where every frond catches the light. It grows slowly, so what you bring home now will stay neat and compact for years. Give it a spot in your urban jungle and it will reward you with a fresh flush of fronds each summer.
Give it a bright spot, with a few hours of gentle sun if you can, because that keeps the fronds sturdy and compact. Water about every other week and let the top few centimetres of soil dry out in between, as the thick trunk stores water and doesn't like wet feet. In winter, ease off and give just enough to stop the soil drying out completely. It's happy at normal room temperature, ideally between 12 and 28 degrees, and average humidity suits it fine, so there's no need to mist. Use a free draining mix, such as cactus soil with a handful of perlite, and repot only every three years or so, since it grows slowly and likes to be snug. Feed it every few weeks in spring and summer, and skip feeding in winter. One more thing: every part of the sago palm is toxic to cats and dogs, so pop it somewhere out of reach of curious noses.
