Plump, glossy leaves with a faint red edge where the sun touches them: that's the jade plant in a nutshell. Each little leaf is a tiny water store, which is how this succulent from South Africa sails through dry spells, and over the years a baby like this grows a sturdy, tree-like trunk. Picture it on a bright windowsill, soaking up the light and looking quietly cheerful. It's a patient, easygoing green friend that asks for very little besides a sunny spot and a sparing hand with the watering can. Give it a few years and you'll have a miniature tree to be proud of!

Give it a bright spot, ideally by a south or west facing window, where a few hours of direct sun will turn the leaf edges a touch red. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings, roughly every two weeks, and go easier in winter: those fat leaves store water, so too much is worse than too little. Soft, wrinkly leaves mean it's thirsty, while mushy ones mean it has had a drop too much. It's happy at normal room temperature and doesn't need extra humidity, but keep it above 10°C and away from frost. Use a cactus or succulent mix in a pot with drainage holes, and repot every two years or so when the roots fill the pot. Feed it a diluted fertiliser once a month in spring and summer. Keep it out of reach of curious cats and dogs, as the leaves can upset their tummies.
