Crassula

(Jade plant) Minor

Plump, glossy leaves about the size of your thumbnail, packed along sturdy little stems: that's Crassula Minor in a nutshell. Give your green friend a bright, sunny windowsill and the leaf edges can blush a soft red, a lovely sign that it's happy. Those fleshy leaves store water, so it sails through a busy week without a fuss. Over the years it slowly builds a woody trunk and grows into a miniature tree, like a tiny bonsai you never had to train. Picture it on your desk or kitchen shelf, quietly growing alongside you in your urban jungle.

Give it as much light as you can, ideally by a south or west facing window with a few hours of gentle sun. Let the soil dry out completely before watering, roughly every other week, then water well and tip away what collects in the saucer. Plump, firm leaves mean it's well hydrated, wrinkly leaves are a polite request for a drink, and soft, yellowing ones mean it's had too much. Normal room temperature suits it fine, and a cooler spot of 12 to 15°C in winter helps it rest. Use a free-draining cactus or succulent mix and repot every couple of years in spring, into a pot just one size up. Feed a little during spring and summer and skip it in winter. Keep it out of reach of curious pets, as the leaves can upset their tummies.

That’s why all plants are guaranteed for 30 days after arrival, if still in its original nursery pot.
