(Jade plant) Gollum

Tubular, glossy leaves with a little dimple at the tip: that's the Gollum look, and it's hard not to touch them. Each stem branches into a chunky, tree-like silhouette, like a tiny jade bonsai that never asked to be trimmed. Put it on a bright windowsill or shelf and the tips may blush red when they get plenty of light. It's a slow, easygoing grower, so it keeps its shape for years and suits busy plant parents just as well as collectors. A real character for your urban jungle, lovely next to something leafy and soft.

Give your Gollum a spot with lots of light, ideally close to a window where it can catch a little direct sun. Water about every other week, only when the soil has dried out completely, and never leave the pot standing in water. Normal room temperature suits it fine, anywhere between 12 and 28 degrees, and dry indoor air is no problem. Repot every two years in airy cactus or succulent soil, in a pot with drainage holes. Feed lightly in spring and summer only, and skip it in winter. Keep it out of reach of curious pets, as the leaves are toxic if nibbled. Wrinkled leaves mean it is thirsty, while soft or yellowing leaves usually mean too much water.
