Thick, glossy, rounded leaves in deep green, each one as sturdy as if it were cut from leather. Run a finger over them and you'll see why Clusia Princess is nicknamed the autograph tree: you can scratch a little message into a leaf and it stays put. Picture this green friend on a sideboard in a bright corner of your living room, catching the morning light and giving the space a lush, tropical feel. It stays nicely compact, so a shelf or windowsill is plenty. Give it a bright spot and a little patience, and it'll reward you with fresh new leaves that unfurl light green before deepening to a glossy dark tone.

Give it a bright spot, with plenty of light but not the harshest midday sun straight through the glass, and the leaves will stay full and glossy. Let the soil dry out a little before you water again, roughly every other week, because those thick leaves store water and don't enjoy wet feet. It's happy at normal room temperature, between 15 and 28 °C, and average household humidity suits it fine, as long as you keep it away from cold draughts and radiators. Use a well-draining potting mix and repot into a pot one size up about every two years, once roots peek out of the drainage holes. From spring to summer you can give it a little plant food about once a month, and in winter it can rest. If leaves turn yellow, too much water is the usual suspect, so ease off before you worry. The sap can irritate skin and mouths, so keep it out of reach of curious pets and small children.
