(Clematis) Ville de Lyon

Clematis Ville de Lyon is a late flowering clematis with rounded blooms of 10-12 cm across in warm carmine red, the six broad sepals edged in a deeper shade and centred on a boss of creamy yellow anthers. The flowers open over a long season against fresh green leaves divided into three leaflets, on a plant that climbs by curling its leaf stalks around its support. It reaches 2.5-3 m in height and about 1 m in width, which makes it a good fit for a fence panel, an obelisk or a large pot on a terrace. Plant one per m2 and put a companion plant in front of it, because the base of the stems naturally goes bare as the season goes on. Flowering runs from July into September, and later still in a mild autumn, with bees working the flowers throughout. It is a good choice for a sunny fence, a pergola post or a wall you pass every day, since the colour reads strongly from a distance.

Plant it in full sun or partial shade, keeping the top growth in light and the root zone shaded and cool under a slab, a low shrub or a mulch. Use deep, fertile soil that stays lightly moist and drains well, and set the crown 5-8 cm below soil level so the plant can reshoot from below ground if clematis wilt appears. Water thoroughly in dry weather, particularly in the first two seasons, and check a container plant often, as pot compost dries out much faster than garden soil. Prune hard every year in late winter, in February or March: cut every stem back to 20-30 cm above the ground, just above a pair of strong buds, and the plant will rebuild and flower on this year's growth. Ville de Lyon is fully hardy and needs no winter cover; a spring mulch of compost over the root area is all the extra help it wants.
