(Mountain Clematis) Rubens

Clematis Rubens is a vigorous climber that covers itself in spring with masses of soft pink, lightly fragrant flowers. The fresh green leaves often carry a bronze tint when young. It grows quickly to about 800 cm in height and 200-300 cm in width. Plant one every 2-3 metres along a wall, fence or pergola, or let it climb through a large tree. Bees love the open flowers in April and May. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.

Plant Clematis Rubens with its head in sun or partial shade and its roots in cool, shaded soil, for example under low perennials or a layer of mulch. It likes humus-rich, well-draining soil that stays slightly moist and dislikes waterlogging. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first year and in pots, which dry out much faster. Give it a trellis, wires or netting to climb on and tie in the young shoots. Prune only right after flowering by removing dead and tangled stems, because hard pruning in spring removes the flower buds. It is fully hardy, but plants in pots appreciate a sheltered spot and some insulation in severe frost.
