Clematis montana Rubens is the vigorous spring flowering montana, smothering itself in May with small four petalled flowers of 4-6 cm across in soft pink, each with a tuft of creamy yellow stamens. The young leaves emerge bronze purple and keep a slight tint through summer, which sets off the flowers well. It is a big plant: expect 6-8 m in height and 2-3 m in width once established, so one plant is enough for a large area. Allow 1 plant per m2 of planting position and give it a strong permanent support, since the mature weight is considerable. The flowers carry a light vanilla scent and are busy with bees on warm May days. Use it on a big wall, over a pergola or carport, along a long fence or growing up through an old tree, but keep it away from small trellis panels it will quickly outgrow.
Plant it in full sun or partial shade; it flowers most freely in sun but copes well with half a day of light. Give it deep, fertile soil that stays lightly moist and drains freely, and shade the base with a paving slab, a low shrub or a thick mulch so the roots stay cool. Water generously through the first two summers and in later dry spells; a montana grown in a large container needs watering far more often, as pot compost dries out much faster than garden soil. Prune straight after flowering, in late May or June, because next spring's flowers form on this year's growth: shorten the shoots that have flowered and cut out old tangled stems, which is all it needs in a normal year. Clematis montana Rubens is fully hardy and needs no winter protection, though late frosts can occasionally nip the flower buds in an exposed spot.
