The Clematis Miss Bateman is a graceful climber with large, creamy white flowers that carry striking chocolate-brown stamens. It reaches about 250 cm in height and 80-100 cm in width at maturity once it has a trellis, obelisk or wire to climb. Plant one every metre along a fence or wall, or 1-2 per square meter on a trellis, for a gradual green screen. It flowers from late spring into early summer and often again in late summer, and its open blooms are a treat for bees. It is lovely on a patio, balcony or garden wall, and also in a large container. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.
Plant the Clematis in a sunny to semi-shaded position, with the flowers in the light and the roots cool and shaded. It prefers rich, moist but well-draining soil and does not like standing water. Water regularly in dry spells, especially when grown in a pot, as containers dry out much faster. Give it a light prune in late winter by cutting back to the first pair of strong buds, and remove any dead stems. The Clematis Miss Bateman is fully hardy and needs no winter protection in the ground; in a pot, place it in a sheltered spot.
