(Clematis) Dr Ruppel

The Clematis Dr Ruppel is a classic climber with large, soft pink flowers, each petal marked with a deep carmine stripe. It climbs to about 300 cm in height and spreads about 80-100 cm in width at maturity. Plant 1-2 per square meter at the foot of a trellis, obelisk or fence. It flowers from late spring into early summer and often again in late summer, and bees love the open blooms. It looks lovely on a sunny wall, in a large patio container or in a cottage garden border. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.

Plant the Clematis Dr Ruppel in a sunny to partly shaded spot, with the leaves in the light and the roots in cool shade. It prefers rich, well-draining soil that stays slightly moist and does not like waterlogged roots. Water regularly during dry spells, especially when grown in pots, as containers dry out much faster. Prune lightly in late winter by cutting weak and dead stems back to a pair of strong buds. This clematis is hardy and can stay outside all winter, but in a pot it helps to protect the roots from hard frost.
