(Trumpet Vine) Radicans Flamengo

The Campsis Radicans Flamengo is a vigorous, deciduous climber with large trumpet-shaped flowers in fiery orange-red, set against fresh green, pinnate foliage. It climbs to about 800 cm in height and spreads roughly 200-300 cm in width when trained along a wall, fence or pergola. Plant 1 per 2-3 metres of wall or fence, as a single plant already covers a generous surface. It flowers from midsummer until autumn and is a magnet for bees and other pollinators. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.

Plant the Campsis in a sunny, sheltered spot, ideally against a warm south or west facing wall, and give it a sturdy support such as a trellis or wires to climb on. It prefers well-draining, moderately fertile soil, and once established it tolerates short dry periods well. Water regularly during dry spells in the first years, and more often when it grows in a container, as pots dry out much faster. Prune back last year's shoots to 2-3 buds in late winter, because it flowers on new growth. The Campsis is fully winter hardy, so it can stay outside all year round.
