(Bellflower) Ambella Intense Purple

Picture a cushion of deep violet-purple bells spilling over the edge of your border, rockery or pots, with bees dropping in all summer. This compact green friend stays low and tidy: it is about 20 cm tall now and grows to roughly 30 cm, spreading 30-40 cm wide. For a full, flowing carpet, plan on 8-10 per square metre, or one or two in a pot or windowbox. The flowers open from late spring through summer, and bees can't resist them. Tuck it along a path, in front of taller perennials or on a sunny patio. Seasonal changes may affect whether it arrives with flowers.

Give it a sunny to partly shaded spot: the more sun it gets, the more flowers you'll see. Plant it in well-drained soil, because bellflowers dislike wet feet and their roots rot easily in heavy, soggy clay. Keep the soil lightly moist and water pots more often, since they dry out much faster than the ground. Once the first flush fades, trim the spent flowers back by about a third, and it will reward you with a second round of blooms. This one is hardy, so it can stay outside all winter; just make sure pots never sit in standing water.
