(Turtle vine) Turtle

Tiny stacked leaves in olive green with silver stripes, packed so tightly along the stems that the whole thing looks like a miniature turtle shell. It trails fast and thick, so within a season you have a curtain of little leaves spilling over the pot edge. Catch it in the light and you will notice a purple flush on the undersides that most people miss entirely. It is genuinely easy going, forgiving of a missed watering and happy in ordinary room conditions. A great starter green friend and a brilliant filler for shelves that need something spilling over the edge.

Your turtle vine wants bright indirect light, and a little morning sun actually deepens the purple tones on the undersides. Water every other week and let the top half of the soil dry out first, because soggy roots are the one thing that will finish it off. If the stems start looking bare near the base, cut them back hard and the plant will bush out again within weeks. Use a well draining mix with perlite and repot once a year, since it grows fast and fills a pot quickly. Feed monthly through spring and summer and stop in autumn. Those cuttings root in water in about a week, so there is no reason to throw a trim away.
