The Calathea Lancifolia Insignis, better known as the rattlesnake plant, is one of the most striking Calatheas around. Her long, narrow, wavy-edged leaves are stamped with bold dark green ovals on a paler green base, and flip over to a deep purple on the underside, a little drama every time she folds up at night. She grows in a fountain-like clump that brings movement to any shaded corner, table or shelf. Give her humidity, soft water and an indirect light source, and she'll reward you with new leaves all season long. A real conversation starter for any urban jungle.
Set your Calathea in a shaded or semi-shaded spot, bright indirect light keeps her colours vivid, and direct sun will fade and burn those patterned leaves. Water when the top of the soil dries, using softened water (rain, filtered or distilled) because she's sensitive to the chlorine and salts in hard tap water. Pair her with a humidifier or other plant friends to keep humidity high, and aim for 18, 26°C with no cold draughts. Repot every two years in spring into a light, peat-based mix with extra perlite. Feed half-strength every four weeks during growing season. Watch for spider mites in dry air, a gentle shower now and then keeps the leaves fresh and pest-free.
