The Calathea Compactstar lives up to its name with a tidy, bushy growth habit and richly patterned dark green leaves traced with silvery-pale stripes. She's the perfect green friend for a shelf, side table, or coffee table corner where you want a splash of pattern without anything sprawling. Her leaves perform the classic Calathea evening fold, a soft little ritual that makes her feel almost alive after dinner. Pair her with a couple of plant buddies for the full urban jungle feel. A great middle-of-the-road Calathea: bold enough to notice, compact enough for any room.
Find your Calathea a bright spot away from direct sun, think filtered light through a curtain, or a north- or east-facing window. Keep the soil lightly moist, watering as soon as the top layer dries out, and reach for filtered or rainwater whenever you can. Humidity is non-negotiable: this is a tropical at heart, so anything above 50% keeps her thriving, ideally at 18, 26°C. Refresh the substrate every two years with a fluffy, free-draining mix. Feed once a month from spring through summer, then let her rest in autumn and winter. Brown crispy tips are her way of saying she wants softer water or a humidifier.
