Are you noticing a change in your plant's leaves, perhaps a shift in colour, curling, or overall stunted growth? You may be contending with an aphid infestation. These tiny pests are easily visible to the naked eye, especially if you know where to look. Be sure to inspect beneath (new) leaves, in the leaf axils, and within the buds. While their colour may vary, aphids are identifiable by their mango-shaped bodies. For more information about aphids, feel free to explore our PLNTSdoctor page.
These rapidly reproducing creatures can quickly overrun your plants in large numbers. They feed on the nutrients present in your plant's vascular system, consuming excessively and leaving behind a sticky residue on the leaves known as honeydew. This substance creates an ideal environment for mould growth, ultimately hindering the plant's growth and development. Fortunately, we have a solution for you!
Meet Puncta, also known as ladybug larvae, natural predators of aphids. These creatures can consume between 200-300 aphids over their lifespan. After 4-6 weeks, puncta larvae can mature into ladybugs, provided they have adequate food and are not threatened by other predators. Additionally, the adult form of Puncta continues to feed on aphids.
Each package contains approximately 100 of these beneficial creatures, along with buckwheat hulls. You can place the entire contents into the cotton bag provided with your order. This bag can then be used to distribute and hang the larvae over the affected plants. 1 package is enough for about 5 middle sized plants. The effectiveness of the treatment depends on factors such as the species of aphids, the type of plants involved, and the prevailing temperature. Ensure that there are no ants in close proximity to the Puncta, as they may disrupt the aphid-attacking process.
