(False Goat's Beard) Fanal

Astilbe 'Fanal' carries upright, feathery plumes in a deep garnet red above finely divided leaves that emerge bronze and darken to green. It grows about 50-60 cm tall and 40-50 cm wide, forming a neat clump that slowly widens each year. Plant 5-7 per square metre for a solid drift, or set three together for a smaller group. The plumes open in June and July, and the rust brown seed heads that follow hold their shape well into winter. Use it along a shaded path, at the edge of a pond, under shrubs or in a north facing border where little else flowers.

Plant it in partial shade or full shade; the flowers last longer and the foliage stays fresh out of the midday sun. It needs soil that stays lightly moist and rich in humus, so work in plenty of compost or leaf mould before planting and avoid dry spots under thirsty trees. Water whenever the soil dries out in summer, as astilbe is one of the first perennials to scorch at the leaf edges; in a pot it dries out far quicker and needs almost daily attention in warm weather. Leave the dried plumes for winter interest and cut the whole plant down to just above the ground in late winter, before the new shoots unfurl. It is fully hardy and needs no protection, though a mulch of compost each spring keeps the soil cool and damp.
