(Elephant ears) Scalprum Aurea

Golden-green leaves shaped like little chisels, standing upright on slim stems: that's the look that makes this Alocasia hard to walk past. Its species name comes from the Latin word for chisel, and the Aurea form adds a warm, sunny glow to the usual deep green. As a BabyPLNTS size it's a compact green friend, perfect for a bright shelf, a desk or a windowsill with filtered light. Give it a little time and every new leaf will unfurl a bit larger, slowly turning it into a real statement piece in your urban jungle. Style tip: place it where you can admire it up close, because the details deserve it.

Bright, indirect light suits this Alocasia best, so a spot near an east or north-facing window, or a few steps back from a sunny one, is perfect. Water when the top 2 to 3 cm of soil feels dry, usually about once a week, and never let the pot stand in water. It loves warmth and a bit of humidity, so keep it between 18 and 28°C and away from cold draughts and heating vents. Use a light, airy, well-draining potting mix and repot once a year as the roots fill the small 6 cm pot. Feed with a diluted plant food every few weeks in spring and summer, and skip it in winter. Yellowing lower leaves usually mean too much water, and a leaf or two may drop in the darker months, which is normal. Keep it out of reach of pets and children, as all parts of an Alocasia are toxic if eaten.
